Mariners hire Ted Simmons as senior advisor

Former All-Star catcher Ted Simmons, most recently the San Diego Padres' bench coach, has been hired by the Mariners as a senior advisor to general manager Jack Zduriencik.

The Mariners hired Ted Simmons as a senior advisor to general manager Jack Zduriencik. The move was announced Friday in a news release from the team.

Simmons, a former All-Star catcher, has been the San Diego Padres' bench coach the past two seasons. Simmons, 61, has been a coach, scout and front-office executive since his retirement in 1988.

He was Pittsburgh's general manager in 1992 and 1993 while Zduriencik was the Pirates' director of scouting.

"I am excited to add Ted to our front-office group," Zduriencik said. "His experience ... will be very valuable to us as a sounding board and advisor."

Simmons, a first-round draft pick by St. Louis in 1967, played 21 seasons in the major leagues, the first 13 with the Cardinals. He also played five years for Milwaukee and three for Atlanta. Simmons was an eight-time All-Star, hitting .285 with 248 home runs.

Simmons was director of player development for St. Louis from 1988 to 1991, and after two seasons as the Pirates' GM, was a scout and assistant to the GM for Cleveland from 1993 to 1998.

He was with San Diego from 1999 through 2001 as vice president of baseball operations, then served as a scout and assistant to the GM for the Padres from 2002 through 2007. He was bench coach with Milwaukee in 2008 before returning to San Diego in 2009.
