Mariners fire pro scouting director Carmen Fusco

The Mariners' dismal season has claimed another victim with the firing of the team's professional scouting director, Carmen Fusco.

The Mariners' dismal season has claimed another victim with the firing of the team's professional scouting director, Carmen Fusco.

The dismissal, first reported by KING-5, is effective immediately, general manager Jack Zduriencik confirmed Monday.

Zduriencik declined to comment when asked if Fusco's firing is related to the controversial acquisition of Josh Lueke from the Texas Rangers in the Cliff Lee trade. As pro scouting director, Fusco was responsible for overseeing the scouting of major- and minor-league teams.

"I wouldn't comment on any of the reasons for this," Zduriencik said. "When a person is not retained, it's something between us. It's pretty simple. We're not going to renew Carmen's contract. His contract ends and we will not renew it. He'll be relieved of his duties."

Fusco is a longtime friend of Zduriencik, both growing up in New Castle, Pa. They previously worked together in the Mets' and Brewers' organizations.

Asked about Fusco's replacement, Zduriencik said, "We'll certainly look for one. Right now, I have some thoughts and ideas. Like any position that's open, we'll entertain people we think are qualified."

Fusco is the sixth member of the organization to be let go this year, following manager Don Wakamatsu, bench coach Ty Van Burkleo, pitching coach Rick Adair, hitting coach Alan Cockrell and performance coach Steve Hecht.
