DETROIT — The Milwaukee Brewers traded slumping third baseman Bill Hall to the Mariners on Wednesday for minor-league pitcher Ruben Flores.
Hall hit 35 home runs in 2006 and was rewarded with a $24 million, four-year contract. But he was hitting only .201 with six homers and 24 runs batted in in 76 games when the Brewers designated him for assignment last week.
Hall is expected to join the Mariners today in Detroit. Seattle is on the fringe of the AL wild-card race, and starting third baseman Adrian Beltre is on the disabled list.
The Brewers are picking up most of the remaining $10.3 million on Hall's four-year deal, which runs through next season.
"We saved some money here," Brewers assistant general manager Gord Ash said, without confirming an exact figure.
"He brings you versatility, he brings you power," Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik said. "This is a guy who's hit 35 home runs in the big leagues [in 2006]. He's been a starting center fielder, a starting shortstop."
And of course, an excellent third baseman. one of the better ones in baseball from a defensive perspective. Adrian Beltre's replacement in 2010 perhaps?
"I didn't promise him anything," Zduriencik said. "I told him, 'Bill, we've got a lot of work to do here. I can tell you you'll play, but I can't tell you how much.' A lot will depend on him."
Hall is now going through the worst slump of his career. He has a .606 on-base-plus slugging percentage.
• Mariners pitcher Daniel Christensen has been suspended 50 games after a positive test under baseball's minor-league drug program. Christensen, a 26-year-old left-hander, tested positive for the second time for a drug of abuse. He is 1-6 with a 4.16 earned-run average for Class AA West Tennessee.
