SEATTLE —

The National Weather Service reports that high temperatures Monday hit the triple digits in much of Washington and Oregon as thunderstorms began to make their way through central and northeast Oregon and into southeast Washington.

Thunderstorms have also been reported in Oregon's I-5 corridor and in the southern Washington Cascade Mountains.

Forecasters say the lightning expected to accompany those thunderstorms could spark more wildfires.

In the Columbia River Gorge between Oregon and Washington, The Dalles, Oregon hit 107 on Monday. Elsewhere in Oregon, Eugene hit 101 while Warm Springs hit 103.

Monday's high was 102 at Kelso in southwest Washington, while Vancouver hit 98 degrees. National Weather Service meteorologist Jay Albrecht says Seattle's high temperature of 96 was a record for Aug. 11 and the city's hottest day so far this year.

Forecasters say the thunderstorms and clouds from showery weather should bring Northwest temperatures back to normal by midweek.
