Remains of 1 body found at Oso site

Less than a month after the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office scaled back its search for victims of the March 22 landslide new remains have been recovered.

Remains were recovered Thursday from the site of the March 22 landslide in Oso, bringing the confirmed death toll to 42.

It wasn’t immediately known whether the remains were those of two people still listed as missing in the slide: Steve Hadaway, 53, and Kris Regelbrugge, 44, said Shari Ireton of the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office.

Hadaway’s brother said Snohomish County sheriff’s officials told his family that the body was found on the east side of the slide site. While surprised by the discovery, Frank Hadaway said, “I’ve heard from day one 8,000 times they’ve found my brother.”

Frank Hadaway said another brother received a call from the sheriff’s office on Thursday about the discovery. He said they were not told exactly where the remains were found or when an identity could be released.

Frank Hadaway said he has been impressed by how quickly the Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the bodies found at the slide site and hopes that will be the case with the body found Thursday.

Steve Hadaway, a satellite-dish technician from Darrington, was hooking up service at a house in Oso when the slide hit.

Regelbrugge, who raised five children, and her husband, John, were at home. John Regelbrugge’s remains were found.

The Regelbrugge family have not spoken publicly since the mudslide.

The half-mile-wide slide buried dozens of homes and Highway 530 in debris up to 70 feet deep.

President Obama, who viewed the slide area and met with victims’ families and first responders last month, announced $7.5 million from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to help Snohomish County with the disaster’s costs.

Shortly after Obama’s visit, the sheriff’s office announced they were scaling back their effort from having about 1,000 searchers on site every day to about 30. Sheriff Ty Trenary said that more searchers could return if specific evidence is found indicating a victim might be nearby.

Frank Hadaway said he has mixed feelings about the possibility that his brother’s remains may have been found.

“My brother has been in there a long time now. My thought is if he died there, he’s buried there,” Frank Hadaway said. “My brother lived by the mountains, he loved the mountains.”

Frank Hadaway said he has taken to regarding his brother and Kris Regelbrugge as “the 530 guardians.”

“If his body is there I know where he’s at,” he said, adding that his brother has “the biggest plot around.”
