The Puget Sound area’s first taste of warm weather in 2014 is on the way, with temperatures that could reach into the 80s by midweek.

If the Weather Service forecast holds, the warmest day would be Thursday, May Day, with a high of 81 at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, which would tie the record set in 1998.

Slightly higher temperatures are forecast for a few other Western Washington cities Thursday, including 82 in Renton, 84 in Olympia and 85 in Vancouver.

Meteorologist Jay Albrecht said some areas around Seattle could hit 80 on Wednesday, although the forecast for the airport, where official readings are taken, calls for a high near 78.

The heat will build gradually, according to the forecast, with Sea-Tac highs rising from 61 on Monday to near 70 on Tuesday.

And as if on cue, though, the warmth is forecast to subside with the coming weekend, as a high of 73 on a sunny Friday gives way to a chance of showers and a high of 62 on Saturday.

Last year, early May brought what passes for a mini heat wave in the Puget Sound area, with highs at Sea-Tac of 84 on May 5 and a record 87 on May 6.

So far this year, the high temperature at the airport has been 70, on April 7.

The normal high temperature at Sea-Tac is 61 for the last few days of April and 62 for the opening days of May.
