CASHMERE, Chelan County — Nurse midwife Stacy Stubblefield was getting her hair colored — with strands in all those foil pieces — when her pager went off Monday. Steve Frink, of Cashmere, said he and his wife, Annika, were driving in from their Ollala Canyon home with her in full-on labor. They were en route to Central Washington Hospital in Wenatchee.

“My hairdresser is ripping out bleach foils from my hair and I grabbed two towels from the salon in case I needed them for a delivery,” said Stubblefield, Annika and Steve Frink’s nurse midwife.

The hairdresser got the bleach foils out, but not all the coloring ones on the left side of Stubblefield’s head.

Stubblefield jumped in her car, foils dangling, and raced about three miles to find the Frinks parked beside the highway.

Stubblefield flagged down a passing sheriff’s deputy and borrowed a pair of exam gloves.

Within about three minutes, the baby arrived healthy as can be.

And about her hair? Turns out the left side had been foiled last, so it got just the right amount of color before Stubblefield washed it out.
