Seattle police shot and killed a man who officers say fired a rifle from an apartment building near Seattle’s Capitol Hill neighborhood early Friday morning.

The identity of the dead man was not immediately released. One resident at the Elizabeth James House apartments who answered a telephone call said police had killed her boyfriend, and then she hung up.

Police were called to the apartment building at 23rd Avenue East and East John Street about 4 a.m. on a report that there was a gunshot in the area, according to police officials. A woman had come out of the apartment building screaming and yelling: “He’s got a gun and he’s threatening to kill me,” said Seattle police spokeswoman Renee Witt

Officers looked up at the second floor of the building and could see a man with a rifle in an open hallway. The man yelled at officers: “I’m going to kill you,” and fired one shot at officers, Witt said. An officer fired back twice, hitting the man, who fell to the floor, police said. The officer has not been identified.

SWAT team officers went into the apartment building, found the man in the hallway and performed CPR, Witt said. Medics arrived and took over, but the man died at the scene.

No one else was injured in the incident.

Witt said police don’t know the relationship between the man and the woman.
