What it is
There may be no issue that concerns as many people in Washington state as education — and no question as urgent, complex and often fractious as how to improve our schools.
That’s why the The Seattle Times and the Solutions Journalism Network are launching Education Lab, a partnership aimed at helping citizens understand and respond to challenges facing public education.
During the next year, Seattle Times reporters will identify and assess promising programs and innovations — both locally and around the country — to problems that have long bedeviled schools.
These stories will build on The Times’ longstanding coverage of education issues, including the most persistent problems. But their emphasis will be on examining, with the same journalistic rigor, potential solutions to those problems.
We also hope to create a new conversation that connects teachers, parents, students and others around innovation in schools. Our Education Lab blog will serve as a real-time sounding board for the ideas spotlighted in the stories.
We’ll also be partnering with parent and community groups, as well as educational organizations, to get input for our reporting, build a diverse network of contributors, and put on a series of community forums.
