FERNDALE, Wash. —

A woman at a Father's Day barbecue near Ferndale was hit in the chest by a stray bullet fired by shooters more than half-mile away.

The Whatcom County sheriff's office says a resident called 911 Sunday afternoon to report bullets were whizzing overhead. Then he called back saying his daughter had been hit in the chest.

The Bellingham Herald reports ( http://bit.ly/17gVGCR) the 23-year-old woman was taken to St. Joseph hospital in Bellingham with critical injuries.

Deputies heard the gunfire and traced the shots to a group of five people on the other side of the Nooksack River. They had been shooting handguns and high-powered rifles. No one was arrested but deputies are still investigating.
