DES MOINES, Wash. —

South King County Fire and Rescue says a new fire alarm system rang bells in all 18 units of a Des Moines apartment building and helped all 65 residents escape.

Assistant Chief Gordie Olson says two men were trapped by flames on third floor balconies early Monday and had to jump. Both are OK. One was treated for a foot injury.

The fire was reported about 3:30 a.m. and went to two alarms because of high flames. Olson says the attic was fully involved, and the roof collapsed on the top six units. Units on the first and second floors are damaged by smoke and water.

The management of the Seafox apartments and Red Cross are helping displaced residents.

A new fire alarm system was installed two months ago.
