A 7-year-old girl walking to school was struck by a car Friday at Greenwood Avenue North and North 130th Street.

The girl, a student at Broadview-Thomson K-8 School, was with her mother and sister when she was hit in a crosswalk shortly after 9 a.m.

She was carried about 30 feet on the hood of the car and thrown another 15 feet, according to Seattle Fire Department spokesman Kyle Moore.

The child was taken to Harborview Medical Center, Moore said, but her injuries were not considered serious.

The girl’s mother was also slightly hurt, police said.

The driver, described by police as an elderly man, continued driving south on Greenwood Avenue North. Police found the car in a nearby parking lot.

The driver was taken to a hospital for treatment and evaluated for possible drug or alcohol impairment.

Just before the accident there had been a report of a car being driven recklessly on the same street; officers determined it was the same car.

The driver was not booked, Seattle Police Department spokesman Jeff Kappel said Friday.

Detectives from the Traffic Collision Investigation Squad are assisting in the investigation, police said.

Seattle Public Schools spokeswoman Teresa Wippel said a number of students saw the incident.

“The student and her family are in our thoughts as we wish her well in her recovery,” principal Wyeth Jessee wrote in a letter sent home with students at the end of the school day.

The letter said counseling staff members circulated in classrooms Friday to answer questions, and the school will have counselors available next week for students.

“We will continue to advocate for increased traffic safety for our students and community,” the letter said.
