PORT ANGELES, Wash. —

The city of Port Angeles has agreed to pay a man $125,000 to settle a claim from last year that police used excessive force in catching him after he fled on a bicycle.

City attorney Bill Bloor told the Peninsula Daily News (http://is.gd/DlG3Qg) the settlement came after a mediation session between city staff and lawyers from 25-year-old Benjamin James Eastman.

Bloor says the city decided the settlement was their best option even though they deny the use of excessive force. But avoiding a lawsuit will save money and time in the future.
