MONROE, Wash. —

Authorities say a corrections officer at the state prison in Monroe, Wash., was treated at a hospital after an inmate punched him in the face during a religious service.

The Daily Herald of Everett reports ( http://is.gd/xQwS5I) that the 56-year-old officer was knocked backward and hit his head on a door Wednesday. He was not identified.

Monroe Correctional Complex spokeswoman Susan Biller said a 59-year-old inmate identified as Allen Pavese was held in segregation Thursday.

The newspaper says the religious service took place at an activities building in the prison's minimum security unit.

Monroe police spokeswoman Debbie Willis says city officers are investigating.

Earlier this month, inmate Byron Scherf was convicted of aggravated murder and sentenced to death for strangling corrections officer Jayme Biendl in 2011 at the Monroe prison.
