TACOMA, Wash. —

University of Washington Atmospheric Sciences Professor Cliff Mass has become the authoritative voice on Puget Sound weather through his blog and a show on KPLU radio.

In a recent interview with The News Tribune (http://bit.ly/11ajW2i) Mass said Washington's weather is more variable than many other parts of the country because of the terrain. He says in a few hours you can drive from a rain forest on the Olympic Peninsula with 160 inches of rain a year to a desert with 6 inches a year.

People planning outdoor weddings or other outdoor gatherings often ask Mass when is the best chance of sunshine. Mass says it's the last week in July and first week in August. He has a Dry Sky Party barbecue on July 30.
