SEATTLE —

Police say the loss was substantial when a jewelry courier was robbed while making a delivery at Northgate mall in Seattle.

As he was getting out of his vehicle with a suitcase of jewels and diamonds Wednesday night a blue van pulled up and three or four masked men got out, armed with ice picks.

They pushed the courier, grabbed the suitcase and punctured his tires. The victim was not injured. The robbers got away.

On March 5 on Mercer Island, $500,000 in jewels were stolen from a courier's vehicle when it was parked in a business area while the courier from New York took a half-hour break.

Surveillance cameras in the area showed a dark minivan stopped next to the vehicle when it was broken into.
