EVERETT, Wash. —

Police in Everett, Wash., say a man was in the basement of an abandoned house, cutting into steel pipes to scrounge scrap metal, when he heard a hissing sound.

That was natural gas escaping from the pipes. Investigators say he paused Wednesday, then lit a cigarette.

The Daily Herald reports (http://is.gd/bYBEJI) that the explosion knocked the house off its foundation, blasted the front door off and shattered windows.

Amazingly, Everett Fire Marshal Rick Robinson says the man escaped with only singed eyelashes. No one else was hurt.

Police Officer Aaron Snell said police were talking to the man.
