Former Skamania County Auditor John Michael Garvison was ordered Thursday to spend three consecutive weekends in jail for violating probation terms related to his conviction for shredding public documents.

A probation officer had recommended 51 days in jail for failing to complete community service work. Garvison's lawyer said he had a good reason - a torn bicep muscle.

The Columbian reports ( http://is.gd/K6oR1N) Clark County Superior Court Judge Barbara Johnson sentenced him to weekend jail so he could keep his job and pay off $62,000 in restitution.

Gavis resigned in 2009 while accused of unauthorized spending. In a plea bargain he admitted he ordered his staff to destroy expense records.

Investigators couldn't find enough evidence to support accusations of unauthorized spending during his four years as county auditor.
