Puyallup Fair roller coaster under renovation

Most of the renovation of the old wooden roller coaster at the Washington state fairgrounds at Puyallup should be complete in time for the April 18 annual Spring Fair.

PUYALLUP, Wash. —

Most of the renovation of the old wooden roller coaster at the Washington state fairgrounds at Puyallup should be complete in time for the April 18 annual Spring Fair.

Workers have been replacing track and support structure for the half-mile ride in a $1.25 million restoration project. Improvements to the cars and loading area should be finished in time for the September fair.

The News Tribune reports ( http://bit.ly/13VViqL) the 1935 "Giant Coaster" is one of only about 20 original wooden roller coasters in the United States that still use authentic cars.

The recent work in increasing the top speed of the ride from 35 miles per hour to a 38 mph rush.
