A police standoff is under way at a skateboard shop in Spokane with a man armed with a machete and sledgehammer.

SPOKANE, Wash. —

A police standoff is under way at a skateboard shop in Spokane with a man armed with a machete and sledgehammer.

Police say the man is suspected of assaulting a resident in an apartment next to the business, in the Hillyard neighborhood.

KREM reports ( http://bit.ly/X6Fc6f) when police responded about 5 a.m. Wednesday the man charged at officers and then retreated to the shop where he works.

A SWAT team has responded. Negotiators used a loudspeaker to tell the suspect to come out the front door with his hands in the air.
