EVERETT, Wash. —

A Snohomish County spokesman says an Atlas Air cargo plane that reported a hydraulic issue after departing from Paine Field en route to Japan landed safely back at the Everett, Wash., airport.

Spokesman Christopher Schwarzen said the two-person crew of the 747-400 "Dreamlifter" dumped fuel west of Bainbridge Island and landed about 4 p.m. Tuesday.

Boeing Commercial Airplanes spokeswoman Kate Bergman says the plane was bound for Nagoya, Japan, to pick up Boeing 787 structure assemblies from Japanese suppliers.

She says the crew followed standard procedures by dumping fuel. She adds they made a "fly-by" pass before landing so airport officials could check that the landing gear was down. Bergman says the plane is being inspected.

Atlas Air did not immediately return a call for comment.
