OLYMPIA, Wash. —

The Senate has approved a measure that would prohibit people from using welfare benefits to buy marijuana or marijuana paraphernalia.

The measure passed on a 39-10 vote Tuesday and now heads to the House for consideration.

People eligible for assistance through the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families receive their cash grants through an electronic benefits transfer card, known as an EBT card. Under current law, EBT cards can't be used for things like gambling, buying lottery tickets, getting tattoos or buying cigarettes or alcohol. The measure that passed Tuesday adds marijuana and paraphernalia to that list.
