Forty-two years after winning their last state title, the Curtis Vikings were back on top Saturday night.
Curtis jumped out to a big lead and held off previously-unbeaten Jackson down the stretch for a 60-56 win in the championship game of the 4A state boys basketball tournament at the nearby Tacoma Dome. It marked the first state title for the Vikings (27-2) since 1971, when they won the 3A tournament.
Playing less than 10 miles from campus, Curtis got another big performance from tournament MVP Dominic Robinson, who had a game-high 20 points.
Dan Kingma had 18 points for Jackson, while teammate Brian Zehr added 15. The Timberwolves (26-1) were trying to complete an undefeated season.
