PORTLAND, Ore. —

Police fired tear gas into a Portland motel room early Thursday to end a three-hour standoff with a fugitive sought by U.S. marshals.

Police said the man barricaded himself in the room and claimed to be armed.

The Travelodge motel was evacuated shortly after midnight, and a street was closed.

Police said that at one point the man released his 15-year-old sister.

He was identified as 34-year-old James David Tautfest, wanted on drug, identity theft and forgery charges from Washington state.

After two hours of negotiations stalled, the police Special Emergency Reaction Team threw tear gas into the room, and Tautfest was arrested. A search turned up no weapon.
