SEATTLE —

A 21-year-old man shot by Seattle police has died at a hospital. Police say the man had threatened both his father and pursuing officers Tuesday night.

Neither police nor the King County medical examiner's office immediately identified the man Wednesday. However, The Seattle Times reported he had been convicted of attacking a woman at a north Seattle park in October 2011. The state Corrections Department said an arrest warrant was issued in late January after the man failed to report to his community corrections officer.

Detective Mark Jamieson says officers responded to a report of a man holding a knife to his father's throat. Police found the young man outside the northwest Seattle home. His father emerged and was moved to safety. When officers tried to arrest the young man, he took off and a stun gun wasn't effective.

Police say that when one pursuing officer slipped and fell, the young man grabbed an 18-inch-long metal bar and came toward the officer.

Jamieson says three officers fired.
