SEATTLE —

A man was in critical condition Tuesday night after being shot multiple times by Seattle police in northwest Seattle.

Police say officers were investigating a domestic violence and possible hostage situation Tuesday night. A caller reported that a family member was threatening to hold his father hostage with a knife.

Detective Mark Jamieson says officers were able to separate the suspect and his father. He says the suspect refused to follow officers' commands and officers used a Taser on him but it wasn't effective. The man ran, and police followed. Police say the man eventually crouched behind a parked car, and later rose holding a large piece of metal.

Officers fired, striking the man several times.

He was taken to Harborview Medical Center. A nursing supervisor told the Seattle Times ( http://goo.gl/IIjOr) the man was in critical condition.
