A man was in critical condition Tuesday night after being shot multiple times by Seattle police near Carkeek Park.

Police were called around 7:30 p.m. to a home in the 10100 block of 4th Avenue Northwest, where a man was holding his father hostage with a knife, according to police spokesman Mark Jamieson.

Police managed to separate the two men, and the younger man emerged from the house. Jamieson said the man started saying things that didn’t make sense and acted as if he were going to run off.

Police officers used a Taser on him, but it was not effective because the man was wearing bulky clothing, Jamieson said. The man ran from the scene, and police gave chase. Eventually the man crouched behind a vehicle, then rose with something metal in his hands.

Police shot him multiple times. Dana Donaly, 46, who lives across the street from the scene of the shooting said she heard seven to eight loud pops.

Medics performed CPR on the man, who was estimated to be about 40 years old. A nursing supervisor at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle said his condition is critical.

Neighbors who arrived after the shooting were not allowed to go to their homes for several hours.
