A Senate committee led by pro-gun lawmakers is blocking bills that seek to control firearms.

Members of the Law and Justice Committee voted Friday to reject five bills related to guns, including one that would have created a task force to study weapon violence. The votes indicate that momentum related to some gun laws may stall in the Senate committee this year, even when the bills have some bipartisan support in the chamber.

Democratic Sen. Adam Kline says the Republican-led majority on the committee was stuck in a rigid policy position that rejects even common sense ideas.

Sen. Mike Padden chairs the committee and didn't hold public hearings on many of the gun proposals. He says he's not sure if the committee will hear a proposal to expand background checks, which the state House is considering.
