OLYMPIA, Wash. —

Most applicants to become a member of the Washington State Patrol won't make the cut. Only one in 40 trooper applicants ever get to wear a badge.

The Olympian ( http://bit.ly/Z7XXby) reports the State Patrol will have 321 troopers eligible to retire by the end of 2017. The goal is to hire 67 cadets for a class in mid-July.

Their first test will be a physical one. If they can run a mile and a half and do a number of situps and pushups within the required times, they will move on to the written exam.

Another class of potential troopers faced these same challenges this past week.
