BLAINE, Wash. —

The Washington State Patrol says an 80-year-old Canadian driver who tried to make a U-turn in the median of Interstate 5 near Blaine ended up colliding with a commercial truck.

Trooper Mark Francis tells The Bellingham Herald ( http://is.gd/o7QAVm) that Leonard Bessner of West Vancouver, British Columbia, moved from the right lane of southbound I-5 toward a gravel strip in the median. The trooper says the man cut off a big rig driver in the left lane on Thursday afternoon.

The rig jackknifed when the tractor cab collided with the back of Bessner's car. The car ended up in the median.

The State Patrol says Bessner hit his head but was otherwise unhurt. Troopers say he acted dazed. According to Francis, the man said he "just wanted to go back to Canada."

The truck driver, also from British Columbia, was unhurt.
