SPANAWAY, Wash. —

Pierce County, Wash., deputies are looking for a driver so enraged that he severely beat another driver who tried to apologize for inadvertently cutting him off in traffic.

Relatives say 46-year-old Scott Bradford is hospitalized with broken cheek bones, a broken nose and broken jaw after Monday's attack in the Tacoma suburb of Spanaway. The victim's father, Jerry Bradford, says a witness who intervened to stop the attack likely saved Scott Bradford's life.

Army veteran Mike Howard says he watched the trouble unfold, then jumped in to help while another witness dialed 911. Howard says the attacker turned on him when Howard pulled out a pocket knife to try to disable the man's rear tire. After punching and kicking Howard in the head, the attacker jumped in his car and drove off.
