BREMERTON, Wash. —

The career and technical education department at South Kitsap High School focuses on environmental conservation and an energy efficiency curriculum.

The program has solar panels on its livestock barn and a composting system for cafeteria food scraps and shop class wood chips.

Students are raising pigs in the barn and monitoring salmon fry in a creek.

The latest addition at the school is a $60,000 wind turbine with 6-foot blades, obtained through a grant from the Office of Naval Research. An outreach coordinator for the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, Corinne Beach, says it promotes interests in science, technology, engineering and math.
