SUNNYSIDE, Wash. —

The Sunnyside City Council voted Monday night to fire Frank Sweet as interim city manager. And Mayor Mike Farmer resigned as mayor and from his position on the council.

About 100 people attended the hearing, and many criticized Sweet for an attempt to fire longtime Deputy Police Chief Phil Schenck, who grew up in Sunnyside.

The Yakima Herald-Republic reports ( http://bit.ly/VS4EMc) it's the latest turmoil in the town of 15,000 that has had five city managers since 1998.
