Dr. Rod Hochman, former CEO of Swedish Medical Center who moved to Providence Health & Services when Providence affiliated with Swedish in 2012, has been named president and CEO of Providence, effective July 1.
Hochman, 57, succeeds Dr. John Koster, who has held that title since 2003 with Providence, a not-for-profit Catholic health-care system based in Renton employing more than 64,000 workers and 3,000 physicians in a five-state area.
Koster, who came to Providence in 1997, has announced he will retire at the end of the year and will work with Hochman during the transition, said Providence spokeswoman Colleen Wadden.
Hochman led Swedish’s efforts to affiliate with Providence, at the time telling Swedish workers that his goal was to create the “best health-care delivery system in Western Washington.” He said he saw the partnership as a “local solution to a national problem” and that it could become a national model for how to fix health care.
Wadden said Hochman’s “affinity and passion” for health-care services that benefit the community is a good fit with Providence.
Since early 2012, when Swedish affiliated with the much-larger Providence system, Hochman has been a group president for Providence. One of two group presidents, he oversaw clinical quality, physician services, human resources and communications for Providence and was in charge of the Oregon and Washington operations.
Hochman, whose medical background is in rheumatology and internal medicine, was executive vice president of Sentara Healthcare, a seven-hospital, 17,000-employee nonprofit health system based in Norfolk, Va., when he was hired to head Swedish in 2007.
Mike Butler, who is now a group president with Providence, will take on a broader role as president of operations and services, Providence said.
