SPOKANE, Wash. —

A police chase ended when officers fatally shot a man early Tuesday in Spokane.

Dispatchers initially received a report that shots had been fired on Spokane's lower South Hill.

The Washington State Patrol says responding police officers saw a man in the area and chased him on foot. The man got into a vehicle and sped away, driving through several yards and fences.

The WSP says the vehicle eventually stopped in the parking lot of the Huckleberry's grocery store. Troopers say shots were fired and the man was killed.

The Spokane County medical examiner later identified the man as 52-year-old Jacob Dorfman and said he died of gunshot wounds.

The State Patrol says no officers were injured, and a handgun was recovered at the scene.
