SPOKANE, Wash. —

A police chase ended when police shot a man to death in Spokane early Tuesday morning.

The incident began when dispatchers received a report that shots had been fired on Spokane's lower South Hill.

The Washington State Patrol says responding Spokane police officers saw a man in the area and chased him on foot. The man got into a vehicle and speed away, driving through several yards and fences.

The WSP says the vehicle eventually stopped in the parking lot of the Huckleberry's grocery store. The WSP says shots were fired and the man was killed. His identity has not been released.

The WSP says no officers were injured, and a handgun was recovered at the scene.
