SPOKANE, Wash. —

A former state representative who served in Democratic leadership in the Washington Legislature during the 1970s has died of cancer.

The Spokesman-Review says ( http://is.gd/6rqEHY) 84-year-old Edward T. Luders died Friday. His daughter, Lynne Young, says he died at a hospice house in Spokane.

Luders was elected to the state House of Representatives in 1970. He served as chairman of the House Ecology Committee and as the House Democratic whip. The Spokesman-Review says he was re-elected in 1972 and 1974 and resigned from the office amid a party leadership squabble in 1976.

Luders also taught economics and government at North Central High School in Spokane for 20 years.

He retired in 1982 as a school district superintendent to become an independent logger and rancher in Pend Oreille County.
