PORT ORCHARD, Wash. —

Homeless advocates in Kitsap County had proposed turning an old church camp into housing for 24 men, particularly veterans.

They would live in small cabins and receive services while watching over the grounds at Camp Calvinwood, a park now owned by the county.

The idea went before county commissioners Wednesday and was denounced by neighbors who said they didn't want a permanent village of homeless men nearby.

After a tense meeting, commission president Josh Brown accused the Kitsap Sun (http://bit.ly/WibKwu) of inciting neighbors in a recent article about the project.

No action was taken.
