Under a new state law, private instructors are now giving driving exams in Washington.

Some instructors told the Yakima Herald-Republic ( http://bit.ly/XDWskq) they've been busy.

John Larson of the A-1 Driving School says he gives more than 80 driving tests a week.

John Tull of FACT Driver's Education says the schools break even for the time they spend on tests, and depend on instruction to earn a profit.

Instructors must have 100 hours of training and be certified. Schools are required to submit maps of their driving course and include certain elements such as intersections and traffic signs. Tests include all the elements required by the state, including parallel parking.

Drivers also have to pass written tests and go to a state Department of Licensing office to pick up their license.
