A Medical Lake man was arrested Tuesday for allegedly causing extensive damage to the Lake City Assembly of God church in Medical Lake.

Joseph Knop, 23, was booked into the Spokane County Jail on burglary and malicious mischief charges.

Spokane County sheriff’s deputies who responded to the church on Sunday morning said it was the worst case of vandalism they had ever seen, a news release from the sheriff’s office said.

Deputy Jeff Conway and Det. Bob Sola developed information that led to Knop’s arrest.

Contacted at his home on Tuesday near the 500 block of East Campbell in Medical Lake, Knop admitted he caused the damage to the church and also told Sola he had several items he stole from the church inside his house, the release said. The items included electronics and musical instruments. The property was returned to the church Tuesday night.
