TULALIP, Wash. —

A Tulalip woman has been charged in federal court in Seattle with second-degree murder in the death of her 1-year-old daughter in a parked car on the reservation near Marysville.

Prosecutors say Christina D. Carlson left Chantel Craig and a 3-year-old daughter alone on Oct. 8 in the car in which they apparently were living. Investigators believe Carlson was using drugs there.

The Daily Herald reports ( http://bit.ly/VR9AS0) in addition to murder, the 36-year-old Carlson is charged with mistreatment.

An autopsy showed Chantel suffered from severe malnutrition, weighing just 18 pounds. She was found covered in waste, and had maggots in her diaper and lice in her hair. Her older sister was in similar condition but survived.

State and tribal welfare workers had been trying to find Carlson for months.
