ANCHORAGE, Alaska —

Fairbanks militia leader Schaeffer Cox is going to appeal his nearly 26-year federal sentence.

The Anchorage Daily News (http://is.gd/YqQocK) reports that within hours of his sentencing on Tuesday he signed a notice to the court saying he intended to appeal. The notice was filed Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Anchorage and will be taken up by the 9th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals in April.

Cox's attorney, Peter Camiel of Seattle, also asked the court for permission to withdraw from any further proceedings in the case.

The 28-year-old Cox was sentenced on nine felony counts, including conspiracy and possessing illegal weapons, for amassing weapons in a plot to kill federal law enforcement officials. Cox was the leader of the Alaska Peacemakers Militia.
