RICHLAND, Wash. —

A former Walla Walla County, Wash., undersheriff has been sentenced to six months in federal prison for stealing more than $67,000 in bail money posted for county jail inmates.

Carole Lepiane was sentenced Thursday in Richland. She earlier pleaded guilty to one count of theft from a federally funded local agency. The Tri-City Herald says she has paid more than $81,000 in restitution, covering the stolen money and the cost of an audit.

The 58-year-old woman apologized in court to her co-workers, family and her former employer.

She was undersheriff from 1999 to July 2009.

Court documents say she used the money she embezzled for personal online shopping purchases and deposited it into her personal account.
