ANAHEIM, Calif. —

Davi Millsaps passed Trey Canard on the last lap to win the season-opening race of Monster Energy AMA Supercross at Angel Stadium on Saturday night.

Canard passed Millsaps to take the lead on the 16th lap, but the Suzuki rider from Murrieta, Calif., returned the favor with a last-ditch effort for the win.

"It was a great night for me," Millsaps said. "This is my first win since 2010, and I was just trying to keep calm out there. It has been a long time since I have led a race, so it was hard to calm my nerves."

Honda's Canard, from Shawnee, Okla., finished second and KTM rider Ryan Dungey of Belle Plaine, Minn., was third.

Two-time 450SX class champion Ryan Villopoto of Poulsbo, Wash., started in 12th place and crashed on the eighth lap. He dropped several positions before re-entering the race.

Honda rider Eli Tomac of Durango, Colo., easily won the 250SX class race. Tomac, the defending series champion, got his eighth career victory. KTM's Ken Roczen, of Germany, was second, followed by Honda's Cole Seely of Newbury Park, Calif., in third.

"I had a tough Heat Race, and that was kind of a wake-up call for me," Tomac said. "This is how I wanted to start the season. I did a few off-season races, like the Monster Energy Cup, and that kept me in shape."

Next week's race will be at Phoenix's Chase Field.
