The "mad scientist" has turned around the Washington Redskins defense.

The Redskins at midseason were on pace to become the worst pass defense in NFL history. Defensive coordinator Jim Haslett was struggling to find the right combinations with his injured-riddled roster.

In the second half, Haslett has come up with creative blitzes and coverages that opponents weren't expecting. Quarterbacks had a 95 passer rating against Washington in the first half of the season. It's been 78.2 in the second half.

Defensive tackle Barry Cofield calls Haslett a "mad scientist." Cornerback Josh Wilson says Haslett's innovations are a major reason - "if not THE reason" - the defense is playing better.

The Redskins host Seattle in the wild card playoffs Sunday.
