HOOD RIVER, Ore. —

Oregon State Police say a vehicle that slid on icy Interstate 84 in the Columbia River Gorge crashed through a guardrail and plunged into the Columbia River east of Hood River. The male driver managed to escape late Monday afternoon and was taken to a hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Police divers searched the river for the vehicle Monday evening, trying to make sure no one else had been inside. The driver was not immediately identified.

The Oregon Transportation Department says the westbound lanes of I-84 were closed for more than a half hour after the crash.
