YAKIMA, Wash. —

Washington has filed suit in federal court against the Yakama Nation over a disagreement about state fuel taxes.

Tribal members are exempt from fuel taxes, and the state and tribe had an agreement that tribal gas station owners would only be required to pay taxes on 25 percent of the total amount of bulk fuel they purchase.

The state terminated the agreement on grounds that the Yakamas had failed to file required audits.

The tribe has already filed suit in Yakama Tribal Court seeking to block the state from assessing the full tax on station owners.

Now, the Yakima Herald-Republic reports ( http://bit.ly/RWNTmB) that the state wants a federal judge to force the tribe to pay about $19 million in unpaid fuel taxes and uphold the state's termination of the agreement.
