SEATTLE —

Online seller Amazon.com has announced it plans to open a 1 million-square-foot distribution center in the Pierce County community of DuPont, Wash.

The Seattle-based company says the complex will create hundreds of full-time jobs with benefits. It says the project would cost more than $100 million. The company is eyeing an opening in the fall of 2013.

At the complex, workers would pick, pack and ship larger items to customers - such as canoes and televisions.

The company has been recruiting military veterans to fill its hiring needs. The distribution center would be located near Joint Base Lewis-McChord, one of the largest bases on the West Coast.
