LONGVIEW, Wash. —

The Longview School District is reviewing the use of an isolation box for special education students after a Facebook photo of the padded box sparked criticism.

Spokeswoman Sandy Catt says the district will make sure Mint Valley Elementary is following state rules for isolating students who may be a danger to themselves or others.

The Daily News reports ( http://is.gd/uPaUXn) the box is not used as punishment and most children use it voluntarily to control their emotions.

One mother told the paper her autistic daughter had been expelled from two schools for hitting, kicking, head-butting and throwing chairs and books. The mother says the box has helped her daughter's self-control.
