King County has agreed to pay an additional $1.48 million in the case of a man left brain-damaged after he was tackled by a sheriff's deputy in May 2009.

The settlement with lawyers for the family of Christopher Harris follows Pierce County Superior Court Judge Stephanie Arend's ruling in September that the King County sheriff's department withheld evidence concerning Deputy Matthew Paul's behavior.

The settlement announced Tuesday is in addition to a $10 million settlement the Harris family received in the midst of a civil trial against King County.

The latest settlement includes $300,000 in sanctions levied by the judge.

Court documents show Harris was walking in Seattle when he was wrongly identified as a suspect in a bar fight. He ran when two deputies wearing black tactical uniforms gave chase. As Harris slowed to a stop, Paul delivered a hit to his chest, slamming him into a concrete wall.

Family lawyer Sim Osborn says Harris suffered permanent brain damage and likely will remain bedridden and unable to talk for the rest of his life.
